Creative Narrative of a Roman Fisherman

This narrative was a cumulative project, meant to show off the accrued knowledge we had gathered over the course of the class Romans in Their Environment about a specific job in ancient Rome which we had been assigned to research. I was required to research the daily life of ancient Roman fishermen and create a creative writing narrative from the perspective of a Roman fisherman showcasing that knowledge. I later presented this information about my fisherman character orally to my peers during class, in the Minecraft world where we had built a fictional Roman province. In this Roman province I built my characters home and the fishery he operates, and I used the research I had done to present what a day in the life of Mamericus Arrius Scaevola looked.

This project was successful in transmitting the independently researched knowledge I had accrued about Roman fishermen and Roman life, however if I could do the project again I would want to make the incorporation of my historical research smoother. Some points of the narrative are very harsh and obviously shoed in to demonstrate my research, because of this the authenticity and believability of my narrators voice as a Roman fisherman and not a Classics student suffers. Rather than writing with my narrators voice in mind, I am often trying to write around his voice in order to present information.

As a Classics student, this assignment pushed my creative boundaries and I was challenged to apply my research in new ways I never had before in a class, such as creative writing assignments and the construction of digital models in Minecraft. The core of the project, however, was giving a voice to the working people of Rome which are often ignored. This project proved that it was possible for me to do so using the skills I’ve gained from my education at Skidmore.
