The Grave Stele of Dexileos

This assignment was a presentation completed during the class Body and Soul in Ancient Greece, during the fall semester I research and refined my presentation and designed a handout for my peers to view during my presentation. Then during winter break the class traveled to Greece in order to perform our presentations on-site in front of the subjects of our presentation. I was required to give a ten-minute oral presentation providing the historical context of the grave stele of Dexileos at the Kerameikos grave precinct and how the stele was an example of the theme of ancient people representing the “body and soul.”

During my presentation I was able to successfully transmit the information I had learnt about the stele of Dexileos, however if I could do it again, I would have made the connection to the body and soul stronger. During my presentation, I focused largely on the social and historical context of the stele and did not address the thematic significance of the stele’s importance to ancient people’s perceptions surrounding the body and soul.

Through this presentation I was able to prove that I was able to present publicly to my peers, research I had conducted independently. Through this, I felt my identity as a Classics student solidify, and I felt more confident in my abilities as an oral presenter of Classical knowledge.
